It’s so hot you guys…

Here in Texas, temperatures are slated to reach over 100 degrees statewide by late this afternoon.

In technical terms: IT’S REALLY FREAKING HOT. #DidWeSayHotAlready?

Defeat the heat with a refreshing Watermelon Margarita direct from our steamy (she’s gonna kill me for that one) mixologist #BexInTheBar!

The recipe for this PhilCollins-worthy cocktail is as follows:

Watermelon purée:
Cut a small watermelon in half. Juice one half and place in blender. Cut other half in to chunks (off the rind) and place in blender. Blend 30 seconds and fine strain.

2 oz Camarena silver tequila
.5 oz Cointreau
2 oz watermelon purée
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz agave nectar

METHOD (fancy way to say “And now…” #TheMoreYouKnow)
Add all ingredients to shaker. Add ice. #ShakeItLikeYourPaidTo. Pour directly into glass. Add additional ice if desired.
It might not prevent chafing, but it sure helps keep your mind off it…#StuffThatHelps

As always, drink responsibly and NEVER drink and drive. Cheers!

MAY 2015

MAY 2015

#Summer #Drinking #StuffWorthNoting

It’s hot, it’s wet, it’s summertime. Here are a few tips to ensure you make it through to the fall…

If you really wanna plug a watermelon, try it this way: Two days before your party, cut the hole and let it fill with vodka overnight. Don’t use more than a 750ml bottle (the average size). The next day, slice the melon in half and with a spoon or ‘baller’ (I just said hole AND baller #Immature) ball the entire watermelon and place pieces into a freezer safe dish or an aluminum pan. Lay them flat, don’t stack; For more than one layer, tin foil works great. Then place in the freezer for 24 hours. Don’t take them out until immediately before your party. Use them as ice cubes in cocktails or plug with toothpicks and serve solo. This will prevent us from all having to see watermelon/vodka drool running down that trendy beard of yours #FearTheBeardIndeed…and if you’re worried about being called out for such a proper party treat, just tell them thier mother told you about it last night. #YoMama

It’s summer! Don’t be afraid to order the tropical drinks. Remember, the larger the garnish the bigger your…#SizeMatters

Don’t forget about Sangria! #Ole

Low on cash, but want to do something romantic for that special someone? Top off a glass of Prosecco or your fave sparkling with Peach Schnapps and drop in a few raspberries. It’s delicious and totally ups the presentation. #GameChanger

If you’re going to a BBQ or event outdoors, and you bring a bottle of red, pop it in the nearest cooler for 15-20 minutes before opening. Although it might have a chill at first, it will raise to 63 degrees in your glass sooner than you think. Nothing is worse on a warm day than hot wine. #SpitBucketRequired

Enjoying cold beers by the grill? Remember that free koozie you got last year that’s collecting dust on top of the refrigerator? #WhipItOut #KeepItCold

Rose` is super hot right now, but it can be REALLY sweet- so if you’re feeling adventerous, but don’t want a cavity, ease in to the dessert wine category with a bold Zinfandel. NOT WHITE ZINFANDEL… just Zinfandel. It’s crisp, cool and a perfect gateway to some of the lighter reds. #TheMoreYouKnow

Enjoy the warm sunny days and, as always, drink responsibly and NEVER drink and drive. #StayAliveDudes

Your Mother!

Are you prepared for this Mother’s day? It’s tomorrow… and just FYI, no one is exempt from this, albeit, Hallmark holiday, as we were ALL born from a living womb. #StuffThatsTrue

Confused about how to celebrate Mom, or just afraid to ask? Here are a few tips:

Don’t hand her the card in the plastic grocery bag from the store you just bought it from.
(On a related note, don’t just write “To Mom, From Me.” You’re not in kindergarten; If you can write in a tip on a receipt at the bar, you can write in a message on a card.) #TipsForLife

Don’t bring your laundry over.

Don’t ask her to make YOU something to eat.

Don’t take a dump in her clean downstairs bathroom.

Don’t roll your eyes when she asks you about your girlfriend/partner/lack thereof.

Don’t order a shot during brunch.

Don’t judge her if SHE does. #YouDriveHerToDrinkSometimes

Don’t let her pay…even if she insists! IT’S A TEST!!! #FailureIsNotAnOption

Don’t ‘Like’ or share anything sexist or defaming towards women ALL DAY.

Hug her.

Tell her you love her.

Tell her no woman or person will ever take her place. #StuffMomsLike

…This should get you to AT LEAST 2PM on Sunday… the rest is up to you. #MayTheMaternalForceBeWithYou

Here’s to all the Mother’s and the Dudes who love them- Cheers!

What To Do Wednesday!

Since we are in the throws of wedding season, we thought we’d share a few cocktail ‘best practices’ for an optimal reception experience…and possibly avoid being ‘that guest’ (we’re looking at you Aunt Rhoda! Four amaretto sours and you’re found telling the new in-laws all about how Uncle Moe drank too much during after war and now has a weakness for penny slots and fast women…we die).

Gin/Vodka tonics are always a great classic go-to. To easily monitor how many your thrown back, request to refill your same glass and ask for one new lime at a time. This way, once the fruit outnumbers the ice, you’ll know when to say ‘when.’ Typically bartenders won’t have a problem with this since most bars are post-ups and glassware goes fast and becomes hard to come by after a few hours. (We’ve all had that glass of White Zinfandel in the brandy glass because both were the only options remaining after 11pm.)

Wine? Start with white and move into red…why? Because after 2+ hours, drinking only red might start to stain your teeth…and don’t think your high school arch nemesis won’t tag you in THAT photo on Instagram.

Shots: Just don’t. PLEASE. JUST. DON’T. Save it for the after party.

Bubbles: Not everyone participates in the champagne toast; But don’t be that guy that goes around poaching the leftover full glasses on the table…And for goodness sake, hold it by the stem, you look like Wreck It Ralph when the white-knuckle it across the flute.

Drink plenty of water! We recommend a glass per cocktail. You’ll thank us the next morning.

Tip the bartenders- because it’s the right thing to do.

And, as always, celebrate responsibly and never drink and drive!

Here’s to ever-lasting love, Cheers!

Cheap Wine is Nothing But a Headache

Have you ever taken a sip of wine and thought “wow, this is why we all hate the French.”

I’d like to invite you into my ‘circle of trust.’ I used to drink very, VERY, cheap wine. Oh yes, I’d purchase it in the 3-liter bottles and scoff at the wines on the top shelf mumbling, “you can’t fool me, it’s all the same.”

Yes- it would be about two or three glasses in before the bold aluminum taste would subside, or that warm bitter residue would leave my tongue, but hey- it did the job.

Did I mention I would also leave the red wine out on my counter? Allowing it to grow to a balmy 90-something degrees. You know, really harnessing ANY hope of getting a decent taste.

Honestly, I don’t know where I picked up that the warmer a red wine is the better it should be; I’m guessing some poorly interpreted YA book I read in 7th grade (did they drink on Fear Street?) but full disclosure: On more than one occasion, I would actually place my wine bottle OUTSIDE my apartment in the blistering Houston sun to get my wine to the ‘optimal temperature’. I still throw-up in my mouth a bit thinking about it; Augh, my twenties.

It wasn’t until I finally had a real bottle of wine, and by ‘real’ I mean a wine that wasn’t just a grape twelve months ago and on the shelf yesterday, that the light really came on.

I remember it like it was yesterday…The bottle was a 2005 Twomey Merlot. Holy MOG it was the smoothest, savory, most succulent thing I’d ever let past my lips.

The way it filled my mouth, alerting every taste bud on my tongue, I was floored. So this, THIS, is what everyone was talking about.

When people would speak about wine the same way they would talk about love, I thought it was all for show- total BS.

It wasn’t. It reallllyyyyy wasn’t.

I don’t think my husband and I had ever sipped anything so slow, with such intention, ever. We immediately started implementing every wine lesson we had since ignored until then:
Only pouring to the widest part of the glass (about 6-8 oz) so it would open up and breath more.
Holding the glass by the stem so that we don’t alter the optimal temperature.

The only thing we couldn’t do was release the overwhelming ‘wine paranoia.’

***Wine Paranoia- the condition in which the person displays relentless anxiety about their next glass without enjoying their current one. Symptoms include ordering an additional glass when your current one is still half-full and pouring from the bottle before your glass is completely empty.***

We also soon noticed, that although we felt drunk that evening, the next mooring the usual dwarf with a pick-axe was pleasantly absent from inside our heads, and other than being a bit dehydrated, we felt totally fine.

We were floored- expensive wine tastes better AND we didn’t have a horrible hangover the next day? Ooohhh…those French are sneaky bastards. (Why, at this point, we still believed that all wine was French is beyond me. I mean, it said California on the bottle…whatever.)

Then we went to find it online. Critical mass- we’re buying an entire case of this heavenly juice!

Annnnnnnddddd there it was: $59 a bottle.

Then, heartbreak.

The next time I would enjoy Twomey was when a client sent me two bottles after I relayed to him the above story, in what I can only imagine NOW, in a very passionate and enthralled way. (Can I just take ALL of my twenties back please?)

My husband and I immediately drank both bottles that same night, only this time we had a bit of a headache the next morning. I mean, after four glasses of anything, you’re gonna feel it the next day.

But from that first experience, we made an effort to re-think the way we chose wine.

We stopped just grazing the bottom shelf. We started asking questions when the wine managers were around. We started noticing the beautiful nuances good wines have- like the tastes of cocoa or cassis, or citrus and spice. We started going to specialty wine shops and liquor stores to check out what the smaller vineyards were producing.

Basically, we started giving a cork. (HA! Wine puns…I’m not drunk now, FYI.)

Yes, we spend a little more, but it’s completely worth it.

Let me help you on your wine journey. Drink me all in (wait- what? Maybe I am drunk…)

Here we will be your beverage gurus. One sip at at a time…everything from pairing a wine with hot wings to what that beer she’s drinking really says about her. You know, #StuffDudesLike.

I have even written a book on my life as a sex chat girl, ‘How to Talk Dirty – A Hands on Guide to Phone Sex’. I have been training girls in the art of talking dirty for the past 3 years and have even starred in my own TV documentary, ‘My Phone Sex Secrets’.
Since which, I have been interviewed on a popular daytime TV show, done several Radio interviews and at one time had a regular guest spot on Fubar radio. An uncensored, internet station on which the first week I talked about buggering the male presenter.

I have done countless magazine interviews including, Mayfair and Escort’s men’s mags. I have even been part of a relationship advice panel for a large UK newspaper. Also, have written articles for Rude Magazine, a female based online mag.

I have since written a second book, a fiction novel about auto-erotic asphyxiation and based around the life of a sex chat girl who is taken over by the alter ego she created to take the more bizarre and depraved sex chat. Entitled, Will You be My Fantasy? Some say it should have been called, ‘Death by Pussy!’ Well, it’s what you guys crave the most.

I have been married twice, worn them out. Now single, free and able to just explore. And, because of this I have started a new adventure. It’s taking recorded stories into the 21st century, phone sex downloads. I call them iwanks, a bit like itunes only much dirtier. Hey Dudes! I am Martin Phillips. I am a sixth grade teacher by day in Lodi, California, the Zinfandel capital of the world, and a kickass home cook by night. Okay, I am inside my own mind, at least. You can decide for yourself, however, and check out my food blog at and watch for my recipes HERE at! I have been a sixth grade teacher for fifteen years, so Nothing scares me! I have been a home cook for twelve years and have entered the small in-home catering market this last year. It has been an amazing ride and I cannot wait to share my recipes with you. I am a firm believer that bacon, pork belly, tacos, pizza, pasta and burgers should be food groups. BBQ is Heaven. Need I say more? Okay fine, I am good with the veggies, too! I cook a wide variety of dishes, from Asian Infusion to traditional carne asada and carnitas, to buffalo burgers, to elegant pastas and rustic pizzas. Look me up and give me a shout!

I have been born and raised in the Chicago area all my life. Music is the biggest passion in my life aside from beer, good eateries, movies and even settling down to indulge in a great read once in a while. I also write for the music review website, WeLoveMetal, where I review albums, concerts and conduct interviews with many musicians. Those who know me well know if you want to hit my softspot, you’ll mention animals and pets. I’m also currently going to school for music business hoping to work for the music industry one day soon. I look forward to interacting with the SDL staff and our fans! Hit me up!

nancyNancy Brown Lady Barber

I was born in Berkeley, California before the Summer of Love. When it came I was old enough to know that I lived in a very special place in a very special time. Dang that I was not old enough to attend any of the cool stuff.

We are native Californians for three generations on my mother’s side of the family. Before that, Norway. Dad’s people were Oakies who fled the dust bowl in the ‘30s and ended up in Solano County.

For nearly 20 years I was a law librarian for private law firms in Oakland, California. Quit that in 2006 for the much groovier trade of barbering. Nowadays I groom gentlemen for a living and paint (in oil) Oakland, its people and trees. I also garden and cat whisper when necessary.

Romaine Ayoki Burrell is my name. I am student of the world. I am from St. Andrew, Jamaica. Waaah Gwaaan massive? (what’s up world/people?). I love to travel and live like a local. I am a food addict. My biggest goal apart from owning my fortune 500 company(yeah I am ambitious) is to see every country in the world two times over. I write on anything I please, even if its taboo. Looking forward to writing for you all.

As a patent and trademark attorney, I get to work with a lot of interesting start-up companies and see fascinating new products. Whenever possible, I love to combine my work with the things that I’m passionate about, like craft beer, motorcycles, lacrosse, and woodworking. But, after a day of staring at a computer or talking on the phone, I need to work with my hands. So, you’ll often find me building something in my workshop, making pens, changing the exhaust on my Suzuki Boulevard M109R, growing hops to make my own beer, or cooking up something spicy in the kitchen and never from a recipe. At the end of the day, I’ll grab a nice porter and watch pro football or college lacrosse, where I’m rooting for the Baltimore Ravens or Towson Tigers (or whoever is playing against Johns Hopkins), respectively.
